Camel Ride in the Sahara

Experience the magic of the desert on camelback. Ride across golden dunes at sunrise or sunset for an unforgettable adventure.

Overview

No trip to Morocco is complete without experiencing the timeless tradition of a camel trek across the Erg Chebbi dunes in Merzouga. Rising up to 150 meters, these golden sands offer one of the most spectacular desert landscapes in the world. Traveling by camel allows you to experience the Sahara at a peaceful, rhythmic pace, exactly as the nomadic caravans have done for centuries.

Whether you choose a sunrise trek to watch the desert wake up, a sunset journey to witness the shifting colors of the sand, or a full-day adventure, camel riding offers an intimate connection with the vastness and silence of the desert.

What to Expect

The Sunrise Camel Trek

Starting early in the morning before dawn, you will meet your guide and camels at the edge of the dunes. As you trek into the silence of the Sahara, the sky slowly transforms from deep indigo to soft shades of orange, pink, and gold. The cool morning air and the stillness of the dunes make this a deeply peaceful and meditative experience.

The Sunset Camel Trek

Departing in the late afternoon, this trek takes you deep into the heart of the Erg Chebbi dunes. As the sun begins to sink toward the horizon, the sand changes from warm yellow to deep orange and rich terracotta. We will stop at one of the highest dunes in the area to watch the sun disappear, casting long shadows across the endless landscape.

Essential Packing List

To make your Sahara camel ride as comfortable as possible, we highly recommend bringing the following items:

  • Loose, breathable clothing: Long pants are essential to prevent chafing from the wooden and leather camel saddles.
  • Sun protection: A wide-brimmed hat, high-SPF sunscreen, and sunglasses to protect against the intense desert sun.
  • Scarf (Tagelmust): A traditional Berber cotton scarf is excellent for wrapping around your face to shield against sun, heat, and wind-blown sand.
  • Closed-toe shoes: Sturdy sneakers or boots are recommended for walking on the sand and mounting the camels.
  • Camera or smartphone: Keep it protected in a zip-top bag when not in use, as desert sand is extremely fine and can damage lenses and charging ports.
  • Refillable water bottle: Staying hydrated is crucial in the dry desert climate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is camel riding difficult?

No, camel riding does not require prior experience. The camels are well-trained, docile, and guided by experienced local camel handlers (cameleers) who walk alongside the caravan. The most challenging part is mounting and dismounting, during which the camel sits on the ground. Your guide will assist you throughout this process.

Is there a weight limit?

For the safety and comfort of our animals, the general weight limit for riders is 100 kg (220 lbs). If you have concerns, please contact us ahead of time.

Can children participate?

Yes! Children enjoy camel riding immensely. Young children can ride in the saddle with a parent, while older children (typically 8 and above) can ride their own camel, which will be safely tethered to the guide's camel.
