Overview

The 3-day Fes to Marrakech desert tour is one of the most practical and scenic ways to travel between two of Morocco's most important cities. Instead of taking a direct transfer, you turn the journey into a complete travel experience through the Middle Atlas, Merzouga dunes, Todra Gorge, Dades Valley, Ouarzazate, and the High Atlas.

This route is especially popular with travelers who want to avoid backtracking. It is efficient, visually diverse, and rich in major highlights, making it ideal for first-time visitors building a wider Morocco itinerary.

The tour balances long-distance travel with strong reward points. From camel trekking and desert camp accommodation to dramatic canyon views and fortified kasbahs, it captures many of the landscapes that define Morocco in a single one-way itinerary.

Highlights

  • Travel from Fes to Marrakech without wasting a day on direct transport
  • Cross the Middle Atlas and Ziz Valley landscapes
  • Experience camel trekking in Merzouga
  • Sleep under the stars in a Sahara camp
  • Visit Todra Gorge and Dades Valley
  • Discover Ait Ben Haddou before crossing the High Atlas

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Fes - Ifrane - Ziz Valley - Merzouga

Depart Fes in the morning and drive south via Ifrane and the cedar forest region. Continue through Midelt and down into the Ziz Valley, where palm groves stretch across the river basin in dramatic contrast to the surrounding dry hills. Reach Merzouga by late afternoon.

Here, swap the vehicle for camels and ride into Erg Chebbi as the light softens over the dunes. Once at camp, settle in, enjoy dinner, and spend the evening in a quiet desert atmosphere that feels far removed from the urban rhythm of Fes.

Day 2: Merzouga - Erfoud - Todra Gorge - Dades Valley

Wake before sunrise for one of the most photogenic moments of the tour. After breakfast, leave the dunes and continue west through Erfoud and the fossil-rich desert towns of the southeast. Stop in Todra Gorge, where steep canyon walls create one of southern Morocco's most striking natural settings.

After lunch and time to walk through the gorge, continue toward Dades Valley. The road becomes more scenic as you approach the valley and its rock formations. Dinner and overnight are in a guesthouse or riad.

Day 3: Dades Valley - Ouarzazate - Ait Ben Haddou - Marrakech

After breakfast, continue toward Ouarzazate and then to Ait Ben Haddou, Morocco's most celebrated ksar and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After exploring the site and having lunch nearby, cross the High Atlas Mountains through Tizi n'Tichka.

Arrive in Marrakech in the late afternoon or evening. By the end of the journey, you will have connected two imperial cities through one of the country's most iconic routes.

Practical Tips

  • Best season: Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) offer the most comfortable temperatures; summer is very hot, winter nights are cold in the desert
  • What to wear: Light, breathable clothing during the day and a warm layer for desert evenings; closed shoes for camel rides and sand walking
  • Sun protection: Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat are essential — the Sahara sun is intense even in cooler months
  • Money: Carry Moroccan dirhams (MAD) for tips, snacks, and small purchases; ATMs are scarce beyond main towns
  • Connectivity: Mobile coverage is limited in remote desert areas — download offline maps and save key contacts before departure
  • Camp comfort: Standard camps include blankets; a thin sleeping bag liner adds comfort in colder months, and earplugs help if you are a light sleeper

FAQ

Is this tour better than going back to Fes?

Yes, if you plan to visit Marrakech next. It saves time and turns a transfer day into a highlight-filled Morocco route.

Is the drive difficult?

The distances are long, but the itinerary is well established and includes many scenic stops that break up the journey.

Can this be done privately?

Yes. A private version offers greater flexibility for stops, pace, and accommodation quality.

What kind of camp is included?

Most options include either a standard or luxury desert camp depending on the package you choose.

Is the desert tour suitable for children?

Yes. Children generally enjoy camel rides and the camp atmosphere. Let us know ages when booking so we can plan accordingly and suggest the most family-friendly camp options.

What currency should I use?

Moroccan dirhams (MAD) are used throughout. Exchange money in Marrakech, Fes, or another main city before departure — rural areas and desert towns have very limited banking facilities.
